It is the lower part of the transmission that you can mess with by dropping the pan, and changing a few components in the valve body, sepatator plate drilling, and the 2-4 servo, that controls what pressure gets to the clutches on the top side. This will actually help the transmission live longer.

The HD2 has a boost valve that will up the line pressure and accumulator springs that reduce the slip between gear changes. But that smooth shift feels comes at a cost, it slips the cutches more and will wear them out. If the appy piston seals and teflon seals are inhalf way decent condition, the HD2 will increase the durability of the transmission by removing the designed in slip the factory puts in for those who want nice sloppy undetectable shifts. Hold the clutch packs tight, not slip, burn up, and put a bunch of heat into the fluid. Basically, the top end of a 4L60E are clutch packs that need a good supply of fluid pressure to I'm not sure why a shop would say not to install the HD2. There was about 80K miles on this particular transmission. Firm up the shifts and up the line pressure for less clutch pack slippage. By the way, the TransGo HD2 shift kit did exactly what it said it would do. It is a great feeling of satisfaction, to learn and do it yourself, which is what having an interest in cars is all about. I think the most important part was getting that $100 junk 4L60E transmission, Being able to take one apart, since I learn best from 'doing' not reading books was the key, but the manuals also explained what all the parts did and how they went together, so the books were also pretty cool in the end as well. While I don't consider myself an expert at 4L60E transmissions, I do have a pretty good baseline understanding of how they work to build on. While I think that part of the fun of driving an old muscle car is yanking gears with a Hurst Competion Plus 4 speed shifter, I think that the engineering and complexity of an automatic is pretty cool. Downloaded several ATSG Manuals, which were very helpful, and spent countless hours fitting and refitting this junk 4L60E transmission together. I watched way too many You Tube videos on the 4L60E of which only a handful were any good. So we didn't want to just tear into this 4L60E without really knowing what the hell we were doing, so we got a junk 4L60E for $100 just to take it all apart and get to know what all the parts are. I have always had stick cars so never really got to know automatics that well except I helped my brother rebuild a THM350 back in the 80's.
